The Gambia has long been a destination for Europeans (locally called 'Toubabs') to meet Gambians, often much younger, for sex and sometimes love. From the outside, it may seem these relationships are purely transactional - the European bringing money (and potential access to a European visa), the Gambian bringing their youthfulness and sexuality, which might be harder to find back in Europe. These portraits were created to instigate dialogue around desire, love, companionship colonialism, security, cultural taboos and power.
